Jenn Stewart

Jenn Stewart was born in Columbus Ohio, but had the good fortune to spent her first twenty summers on an island off the coast of Maine, sailing, hiking and being totally immersed in the wild part of downeast Maine.  This love of the coast inspired her to start painting at an early age as a way to be in the moment while painting and to freeze time on the canvas.

Jenn earned a BFA in painting from Wittenberg University in 1991 focusing mostly on figurative work.  About a decade ago, she shifted back to landscape, and took plein air workshops with Stan Moleller on Monhegan and Tim Horn in Ohio and has been actively plein air painting since then.  Her work explores light and shadow across a range of subject matter from inner city, to Ohio farms and her beloved Monhegan and the Maine Coast. Currently focusing on the power of composition and value, she continues to explore and refine her skills.  Annual trips for a week of painting on Monhegan keep her connected to the island that has inspired so many generations of painters.  Wherever she is painting, she strives to evoke a strong sense of place and an emotional response in the viewer.

She regularly participates in plein air competitions and juried shows, and has received numerous awards. Currently Vice President of The Ohio Plein Air Society and an active member of  Central Ohio Plein Air Painters, she is most happy painting outdoors somewhere ‘on the edge of danger’.
